Danny Miller Experiences Benefits, Community Through Hot Yoga

Testimonial | Feb 05, 2018

Danny Miller Sterling Hot Yoga Mobile Yoga Benefits TestimonialThe thought of practicing yoga in a room heated to 105 degrees and regulated at 40 percent humidity can be an intimidating one for many people. But for Danny Miller, that was part of the intrigue.

“I was curious about ‘hot’ yoga, and I was looking for a challenge and a good sweat,” he said.

Now, six-and-a-half years later, Danny can safely say that hot yoga has become a way of life.

His journey into yoga began simply enough—he was looking for an exercise that was less stressful on his bones and joints. And in the hot room, he found it.

The sequence of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practiced in original hot yoga is meant to be as restorative as it is strengthening. The precise order of the postures in the heat offers multiple benefits, such as restoring range of motion to joints, healing chronic pain and relieving stress.

From a consistent practice, Danny has experienced improved flexibility, increased stamina, a stronger immune system, less inflammation and a better mental state. But that’s not the only thing that keeps him coming back to the hot room.

“The continued improvement in my flexibility and strength, and overall health,” he said. “And the new friends I’ve made along the way.”

Though he describes yoga as a “huge part” of his lifestyle, he said he still sees progress in his mental and physical toughness each year, and that’s been a pleasant, but surprising realization.

Danny remembers that the first class can be scary and intimidating, and, yes, it is really hot! But making the commitment to try can be the hardest, though most important part.

Beyond that, he did have some words of advice for the first-time student: “Just go in with no expectations,” he said,” and listen to your body.”

In Danny’s nearly seven years with Sterling Hot Yoga Mobile, he’s seen growth and transformation—from name changes to class offerings to ownership. But one fundamental thing has stayed the same.

“There’s an energetic atmosphere that everyone feeds off of,” he said, “allowing one to push further and to take their practice to the next level.”

James Willis Changes Mindset About Yoga, Changes His Life

Testimonial | Jan 08, 2018

James Willis Sterling Hot Yoga Mobile Testimonial Weight Loss Benefits of YogaSeveral years ago, James Willis took his first yoga class on the day after Thanksgiving with results for which he wasn’t so thankful. “It was so overwhelming to me that I was unable to get through the entire class,” he said.

He tried again the next year—on the day after Thanksgiving again—with similar results.

But James knew he needed to make a change. Deconditioning, past injuries and poor lifestyle choices were taking their toll.

“Over the years, I’ve had several lower back operations; experienced severe limitations from chronic pain elements (rheumatoid and osteoarthritis), and had bilateral knee problems from years of running and playing league tennis,” he said.

“I also ruptured my left Achilles tendon in 2005. These factors, unfortunately, contributed to a low phase in my life that I believed would be permanent.”

Rather than giving up, James changed his mindset. But he admits it was a struggle between his inner critic and his determination, especially during the first two to three months of the regular practice he began in June 2016.

And then there was the heat. “The heat only intensified my struggle until I ultimately learned how to soothe the intensity of my emotional responses,” he said.

Ultimately, his determination was stronger than self-criticism. “I had reached a point where I realized I needed to adopt a different mindset and consider a healthier approach (with reasonable goals) to living,” he said. “I decided to take control of my circumstances and improve my quality of life.”

Since then, James has maintained his practice, incorporating hot 26/2, hot hatha, yin and restorative yoga styles into his routine.

“Because of the benefits of yoga, I started modifying my diet and levels of nutrition to accommodate my regular yoga schedule which directly led to a reduction in weight within the first year of 53-plus pounds,” he said.

James credits yoga for being “a life-changing experience” personally and professionally. His successes led him to incorporate yoga into his practice as a mental health professional with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

“I am working to gain credentials for teaching a broad spectrum of trauma-sensitive yoga techniques to some of our military service members and veterans,” he said.

Multiple research has shown the positive impact yoga and meditation can have on the health and healing of military communities, particularly in the treatment of PTSD. In some military programs, yoga has become mandatory.

At Sterling, James said he has found a “wonderful sense of community and support” with a schedule that offers options to help maintain a consistent practice and a location that’s convenient to his office and home.

But it’s the sense of health and fulfillment on the physical, psychological and spiritual levels that keeps him coming back.

He’s grateful for overcoming his initial struggles, so he has some words of advice for new students or anyone considering trying yoga for the first time.

“If you care enough about yourself, commit to practicing three months of consistent yoga,” he said. “The benefits of yoga will eventually consume your life, for the better.”

While James cautions that it won’t be easy initially,  the struggles, the challenges hold valuable lessons.

“Expect a war between your mind and body as you establish a new direction in your life course,” he said. “Embrace the benefits of each class; refrain from making any judgments, comparisons, or setting any expectations for yourself; and honor where you are at each moment.”

What does yoga have in store for you? You’ll never know unless you try! Get started with our introductory special—$30 for 30 days of UNLIMITED practice—and experience how yoga can change your body, your mind and your life!

Rowena Strengthens Practice Through 50 Feats of Fitness

News | Mar 30, 2016

Rowena_IH challenge adWhen Rowena Mahloch turned 50, she spent the next year challenging herselfthen celebrating all the things she pushed herself to do.

These personal challengesthese “50 Feats of Fitness”ranged from developing a handstand and holding a plank to setting a goal of completing 50 Iron Hour classes at Sterling Hot Yoga Lexington.

“The reason I started is I just wanted to celebrate what I can do,” Rowena said. “At some point, I’m not going to be able to do all these things.”

A regular practitioner of hot yogafor at least 10 years, she saidRowena was already looking for something to develop upper body and core strength before the studio started offering Iron Hour classes about a year ago.

“The Iron Hour classes are perfect for that,” she said. “I can definitely see improvement in upper body and core strength.”

Beyond that noticeable difference, Rowena said she can see improvements in much smaller ways in her hot yoga practice.

“My grips are more secure,” she said. “Iron Hour has helped me make tiny adjustments to take my hot yoga practice further. Especially the extension in half moon, I’m trying to use my upper body.”

Rowena credits her strong practice with more than just the time she’s spent on her mat and more than the added strength that Iron Hour has helped develop.

In her decade of practicing hot yoga, Rowena has practiced in other studios, but she said there is just something different about SHY Lexington.

“The main difference is the community spirit. People know each other, and they are all supportive,” she said. “There is a huge difference in the quality of instruction. All of the teachers are on the same page in terms of philosophy and mindset.”

She feels like this gives her a strong foundation, and instructors at other studios have noticed, complimenting her practice, even down to the minutiae of the postures, she said.

Finishing her “50 Feats of Fitness” in a year’s time was challenging enough, but Rowena encountered other difficulties as she powered throughand completedeach one.

Rowena_handstand For example, the handstand challenge was difficult because she had to work through fear caused by her wrist injury. Still, at the end of 30 days, she was able to do a handstand. “It was against a wall, but at least I did it,” she said.

When Rowena reached her Iron Hour goal, she said she felt a real sense of accomplishment because not only did she complete the classes, but also she had to make the commitment a priority, working the studio’s class schedule into her own.

“The Iron Hour challenge was difficult just because of the length of time,” she said. “It was difficult in terms of needing to plan.”

Rowena’s dedication to her showcases of strength did not go unnoticed. “Rowena is an inspirational person because she is always challenging herself, and that in turn inspires those around her,” said SHY Lexington owner Jodi. “We are honored to have supported her through one of her 50 challenges, and we are so proud of her.”

On and off her mat, Rowena is known as someone who doesn’t back down in the face of a challenge. “In the bigger Lexington community, she is always raising funds, supporting different agencies or forming groups to inspire people,” Jodi said.

Just a few of the organizations she’s involved with include: the Community Action Council (board member and Program Development Committee chair), Lexington-Fayette Urban County (LFUC) Human Rights Commission (commissioner), CASA of Lexington (court-appointed special advocate) and the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center (volunteer crisis counselor and former board member).

Rowena’s commitment and drive on her mat have led to physical differences and all-around changes off of it. “I became more conscious about my eating habits. As I progressed, I made changes in life to find better health,” she said. “I feel like I have a heightened awareness of my health. I realized I could practice yoga throughout my entire life. It’s something I could carry through to the end.”

Are you ready for a challenge? You don’t have to do 50 Iron Hour classes like Rowena did to get stronger! Sign up for the $30 for 30 day introductory special at SHY Lexington, and get fit today!

How Hot Yoga Transformed Tom Palmer

News | Dec 02, 2015
Tom Palmer Before and After Weight Loss Hot Yoga

Tom’s transformation since 2001 (with his son, Josh) has resulted in better overall health, discipline and more with a consistent hot yoga practice.

In 2001, Tom Palmer was in rough shape. He weighed 245 pounds and was on the verge of a physical breakdown.

His organs were starting to fail, and he was most certainly approaching a diabetic diagnosis.

Today, though, he stepped on the scale and was pleased to report that he has lost more than 100 pounds! Today he’s a fit and healthy 140 pounds!

Tom found yoga in 2007, which almost immediately helped him to shed significant weight.

But a continued practice helped him to gain discipline, dedication, focus, determination and, most importantly, self-respect.

Those characteristics allowed him to eat healthy and maintain a lifestyle that kept him healthy over the long run. Isn’t this what we all want?

Want to learn how Tom did it?

Come to Sterling! Sign up for our 30-day introductory special, and start your own journey to better health!

Sylvia Warms Up to Hot Yoga Through Rekindled Friendship

News | Nov 26, 2015

Sylvia Cobra Hot Yoga BenefitsA rekindled friendship (thanks to Facebook) and a heart open to new experiences led Sylvia Boggs to hot yoga.

She and one of her childhood best friends spent four hours together catching up after reconnecting through social media.

But it was something that her friend spoke about with such animation that caught Sylvia’s attention, and that was hot yoga.

“I’ve made it a practice to try to honor other people’s passions,” Sylvia said.

Now her friend’s passion has become her own—December will mark the sixth year since Sylvia has incorporated hot yoga into her life.

“It’s changed my life on so many levels,” she said, crediting the practice with healing her physically and emotionally.

After three years of practice, Sylvia said she finally felt the rod in her back didn’t limit her. A continued commitment to hot yoga helped her heal through injuries and open her shoulders.

“The list goes on and on,” she said.

Sylvia introduced her youngest daughter to hot yoga, but two years passed before she got hooked on it, she said. Not until she texted her mom that she wanted to try it again did it become her decision, and that was key.

“Try hot yoga because you want to try it, not because someone else wants you to,” Sylvia advised. “As long as you do it for yourself, not someone else.”

That doesn’t stop Sylvia from trying to introduce the practice that she loves so much to others. She explained that she’ll give lessons in pranayama deep breathing—the breathing exercise at the beginning of every class—to anyone she brings.

“If I feel comfortable,” she said, “then the rest of the class is easy.”

Finding comfort—in and out of the studio—has been a challenge at times for Sylvia. She’s had issues with claustrophobia, but fortunately yoga is ideal for its relaxation techniques that alleviate that anxiety.

A loving, welcoming, accepting environment is exactly what Sylvia said she has found at Sterling Hot Yoga Lexington—both in and out of the hot room.

“I’ve laughed out loud, I’ve cried,” Sylvia said, describing the range of reactions she has had in class. “But I’m in a place where I’m free to express that. It’s a very loving environment. It’s welcoming and safe.”

But that doesn’t mean Sylvia isn’t afraid to step out of her comfort zone. She and a friend just recently celebrated their first season of their kayak rental business, Central Kentucky Kayaking.

The two decided they wanted to open a business together and had an opportunity to buy property with frontage, but they hadn’t planned on a kayak rental business from the outset.

“Everything just happened like it was supposed to for us to be able to do this,” Sylvia said.

Perhaps it’s a side effect of her hot yoga practice that’s pushed Sylvia into being open to new experiences. After all, that sums up her practice journey.

“I have a new experience in every class I have. I learn something about myself in every class,” she said. “I love the fact that the sequence is the same so you can measure yourself.”

Sylvia isn’t just learning something new about herself; she said she makes a conscientious effort to tune in to the dialogue, as well.

Even after six years of practice, she said she still hears something new. And she’s taken her attentiveness to detail in yoga postures outside of the hot room to be a better listener.

The positive physical, mental, emotional and spiritual changes Sylvia has experienced from her hot yoga practice have not gone unnoticed by SHY Lexington owner Jodi.

“Sylvia is an amazing spirit and light in our studio. This yoga is so cool because it brings awareness,” she said. “It allows you to connect with your breath and body, and in the end, all of the things that aren’t serving you disappear.”

Though Sylvia must face the ups and downs of life as everyone does, a consistent hot yoga practice appears to give her the positive outlook to help manage them.

“Every time Sylvia practices, the joy in her life shines brighter,” Jodi said.

Sylvia had equally high praise for Jodi and the yoga community at SHY Lexington. “I’m grateful Jodi is around, and I’ve gotten to know her,” she said. “I love the community there. I love the support from friends at the studio.”

There isn’t one part of Sylvia’s life that her hot yoga practice hasn’t affected.

“I developed a new life philosophy since I started practicing,” she said. “It’s more evolved, more open, and it’s still evolving. It’s practice, not perfection.”

And the steamy conditions in the hot room have helped Sylvia manage the local climate, too.

“I love the heat,” she said. “I don’t know how I survived winter without yoga.”

Feeling the chill of winter weather? Join Sylvia at Sterling Hot Yoga Lexington and warm up with our $30 for 30 days of unlimited yoga introductory special, and begin your journey today!

Zip Credits Hot Yoga for Dramatic Stress Management

News | Nov 04, 2015

Zip Irvin hot yoga benefitsIn 2003, Zip Irvin had come to a crossroads in his life as a graduate student at North Carolina State University and musician in Raleigh.

“The quality of my life was getting worse, and the length would get shorter if I continued on that path,” he said.

Then he found hot yoga.

His interest was piqued after he kept seeing a hot yoga studio near Wake Forest, and finally he decided he would check it out.

Though he likens his first class experience to “a crying version of Jabba the Hut,” Zip just kept going.

He was even more motivated to consistently keep practicing after the owner of the studio called him and encouraged him to stick with it.

“There was an authenticity of him wanting me to come back to practice. He was very much like Jodi,” Zip said, comparing him to the Sterling Hot Yoga Lexington studio owner. “She wants people to be there for more than just business. I’m very grateful for that.”

After 11 years of practicing hot yoga, Zip has experienced numerous physical and mental benefits. Among them weight loss, regulated metabolism, lower blood pressure, mental acuity, stress management, and greater focus and determination.

“My ability to breathe has been greatly enhanced,” he said. “Overall, every aspect of my life has been enhanced.”

The sociology professor at Eastern Kentucky University especially credits his hot yoga practice for being able to handle stress better.

“There has been dramatic improvement in my ability to handle stuff, just general day-to-day stuff,” Zip said.

Multiple studies have confirmed that yoga helps reduce stress and anxiety, enhances mood and improves an overall sense of well-being.

For Zip, that’s just the beginning. He said his hot yoga practice has also helped him quit drinking alcohol and realize his potential.

“I can do a 30-day challenge in 20 days,” he said. “It pointed me to the reality that my capacity is much greater than I have ever given it credit for.”

Though he lives 27 miles from SHY Lexington, Zip makes the time to practice, which he does four to seven times a week. “My Sterling hot yoga practice is the centerpiece of my workout regimen,” he said.

“Zip’s consistent yoga practice is amazing considering his commute,” Jodi said. “It’s a pleasure to have Zip as such a big part of our community; he is such a wonderful person.”

For Zip and others, Jodi noted the impact of a consistent hot yoga practice, particularly on the ability to handle stress.

“It lays the groundwork so the peaks and valleys of life aren’t so high or low,” she said.

Speaking from personal experience, Zip encouraged anyone considering hot yoga to just give it a try.

“Do it and come back as much as you can,” he said. “Give it 30 days.”

Want to take Zip’s advice and see what positive changes hot yoga holds for you? Take advantage of our $30 for 30 days of unlimited yoga introductory special and begin your journey at Sterling Hot Yoga Lexington today!
